How it works

About NGI Forward

The Project

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, launched by the European Commission in the autumn of 2016, aims to shape the future internet as an interoperable platform ecosystem that embodies the values that Europe holds dear: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and protection of data. The NGI will drive this technological revolution and ensure the progressive adoption of advanced concepts and methodologies spanning the domains of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, interactive technologies and more, while contributing to making the future internet more human-centric.

This ambitious vision requires the involvement of the best Internet researchers and innovators to address technological opportunities arising from cross-links and advances in research fields ranging from network infrastructures to platforms, and application domains to social innovation.

This NGI Exchange Platform aims to build a vibrant and engaged online community for leading thinkers, stakeholders and interested citizens to dialogue around the future Internet and its governance. Specifically, we aim to:

  • Host a diverse, inclusive and dissent-tolerant community interested in the future Internet.
  • Open up the debates around the future of the NGI to a wider audience, specifically focusing on involving “unusual suspect” stakeholders, such as the general public and the hacker community.
  • Inform the NGI community informed on related open calls, physical events and other opportunities to engage with the initiative.
  • Treat the discussion on the platform as valuable input for future policy decisions about the NGI.

Take part

How you can participate on this platform:

  1. Sign up here to join our community.

  2. Join a Virtual Cafe community call, our online video gathering to meet other community members! We have regular calls every second Tuesday from 18:00 to 19:00 Brussels time starting on the 9th of July. Calls are hosted in English, and you'll need Zoom to participate.

  3. Tell us about you: What is a burning question that drives your work? How did you get started and what hurdles have you met along the way? Which doubts do you have about the work you are doing and the path forward? What kind of support would you like to offer others traveling a similar path?

We look forward to meeting you and talking to you!

Privacy & Consent

NGI Forward is a social innovation project at heart. It brings a diverse community together to rethink how we build the Internet; citizens, activists, makers, technologists, entrepreneurs, experts, policymakers and more.

Most of the community conversation around the Next Generation Internet will happen on this platform – we expect the participation to be large, diverse, and rich.

Learn more about the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy of this platform.

Who operates the NGI Exchange Platform?

Edgeryders OÜ (Estonia) is the consortium partner that maintains and operates this NGI Exchange Platform, including the stack of digital tools and community management that powers the collective sensemaking on this platform. The NGI Forward project includes several other consortium partners.

What happens to your data?

Some of the NGI Forward activities will be to use software to monitor and assist collective intelligence social dynamics in online communities. Our objective is to help the community discuss, evaluate and ideate new human centric internet solutions.

To do so, we analyse the content of the conversations through software which helps bringing participants together by identifying points of consensus and controversy, summarizing and structuring arguments.

For the means of the NGI Forward project, we share via secured and encrypted means access to research data, marked up for ethnographic study, after pseudonymization.

How is sharing your data here different from sharing them on a commercial social platform (e.g.: Facebook, Instagram, …)?

We will not sell, or disclose your data to third parties. All the information contained on this platform is only accessible to registered users, and to the consortium members. These are committed to analyse the data on this platform solely with the purpose of studying which insights and proposals for a Human Centric Next Generation Internet are truly born out of the community conversation and collectively validated by the participants.

Other social platforms gain from advertising, surely you will profile me to match me with some offers?

While matchmaking with solutions (not offers!) would be a very cool feature, we are not there yet :-)

Any data shared will be used to study the conversation around Human Centric Next Generation Internet solutions, and will not be repurposed for profiling or anything like that. Any new use intended for data on the platform will be rolled out only after informing all users about the change of scope.

This platform could conduct small social experiments by modulating the exposure to information for certain groups …

NGI Forward may steer some conversation to explore the impact of certain information, or the reaction of the public to certain scenarios. However, unlike e.g Facebook, NGI Forward is supervised by an ethical advisory and undergoes ethical review, and will publish openly accessible reports describing the scope and any results.

Can you modify or delete your data once you have started using this platform?

Yes, you have a right to delete your profile in full, by contacting Mr. John Coate (@johncoate or, who will be responsible of removing your profile data and conversation from the servers, and from the datasets shared with the research groups.

Should you want a copy of these data, make that clear in your request, or download them yourself via "User Profile → Activity → Download All" in your user menu. If you make your request for deleting without any of these steps, your data will be lost forever.

Who has my consent to analyse my data? How can I be more informed about the scope of use?

NGI Forward will study the conversation on human centric internet solutions, and whether this can inform new bottom up workarounds to scale, new policy proposals and design of future European funding programs.

If you want to know more you can just participate in one of our community calls before deciding to give your consent and join us!
